TARA

is a Tibetan Buddhist icon. She is a "Bodhisattva". This term refers to any being, male or female, human, animal or divine, who has consciously delayed reaching perfect enlight

enment in order to save all beings from suffering.

A Bodhisattva has vowed to persist in that quest for as many lifetimes as it takes to accomplish this task.

TARA's name means The One Who Saves.

Her compassion for living beings, her desire to save them from suffering, is said to be stronger than a mother's love for herchildren. She represents purity, offers peace, prosperity, long life health and good fortune. She is the female companion of LOKESHWARA, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
